YPM & Green Anglicans Hike 2025

The Young Peoples’ Ministry Council together with Green Anglicans held a hike from Cecilia Forest to Kirstenbosch Gardens onSaturday 15 March 2025. During the hike, we were reminded ofour uniqueness and the significance of being different as childrenof God. The highlight for me was at the end of the hike, when oneyoung person reflected “today taught me that in life we all moveat different paces towards the same goal”. We thank God, parentsand parishes that ensured that the hike was a success and praythat more young people can join us in future. JP Roberts from the Green Anglicans team and rep on the Diocesan YPM committee led the group in a devotion by the waterfall on Psalm 19:1, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands”, challenging the young people to see God in the nature that they were in. To see, hear and smell how nature glorifies God, and do we see God’s glory in our neighbourhoods. Siphe NyabaYPM Coordinator Diocese of Cape Town

We don’t eat Flowers we eat Food.: “Be veg, Go green for the better future”

The Anglican Servers in Action (ASIA) from the Diocese of Mzimvubu, Flagstaff Archdeaconry has embarked on a “Be veg, Go green for the better future” project, where vegetable gardens are started in Parishes so that the needy may gain.  On the 2nd of October, ASIA started a vegetable garden at the St Augustine’s Parish Tshandatshe, where a variety of vegetables were planted. On 31 October 2020, in accordance with Isaiah 61 verse 11- (“For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign Lord will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations”). On both occasions the weather was not good, but the work was successful with God’s grace. We also remembered that rain is a signal of new beginnings, new strengths, new goals and it was time to bloom. And as of Proverbs 28 verse 19 (“Those who work their land will have abundant food, but those who chase fantasies will have their fill of poverty”). This is an on-going initiative, and all Parishes of the Flagstaff Archdeaconry are expected to have all the greens in their gardens.   The project is proudly inspired by Green Anglican, also under the Parable that states “For change to occur it has to start with you.”  Driven by the Proverb that says “a little goes a long way”. We used what we had to gain what was needed. By Naledi Kalipa Photo: Naledi Kalipa

#Togther4Creation

A group of young people from different denominations in Cape Town started an ecumenical group during the Season of Creation (1st of Sep to 4th of October). The ecumenical group was started by youth and environmental sustainability champions from the Anglican, Catholic, Dutch Reformed, Lutheran, and Methodist churches.  They called the group #together4creation to show that they would continue working together after the season of Creation. On the first of September they held a virtual opening prayer service to celebrate World Day Prayer for Creation and the launch of the 2020 Season of Creation.  One of the main highlights was a testimony from Ms. Katleho Lucas who sadly lost her father early this year, but through doing some gardening, she has come to heal and feel connected to her late father. The Guest speaker for the event was Fah Kululekani from the Lutheran Church. A competition was also started “reduce, reuse, repurpose” to come up with new ideas on how to reuse plastic items. The various youth chaplains also prepared a short environmental message for each Sunday during Season of Creation. The young people prepared a video for the Season of Creation as well. A prayer walk/hike amidst of covid-19

2020 has been a daunting year spiritually, physically, mentally and more especially financially. This year alone we have witnessed such a high rise in number of deaths, cases of gender based violence especially femicide, job loss, as if that was not enough we continue to witness the brutal killing of children and also adaption (which we believe to be associated with human trafficking). So as expected young people have been under a lot of strain, the hope of finishing school ‘indue course’, of finding a job or even keeping one has been wearing down on them a lot. It is out of these reasons that youth of St Raphael’s (Sobantu, Pietermartizburg) decided to embark on a journey of seeking God’s intervention while experiencing nature. Joined in the hike were young people from Prince of Peace parish (Inanda), St Mary’s (Hammersdale), St Paul’s (Durban), St Faith’s (Durban), St Andrew’s (Clermont) and St Saviour’s (Ntuzuma) The hike took place at Giba gorge (Pine town) on the prayer items,; depression was the top of the list, self-worth and employment followed. Each obstacle conquered a prayer was said. Lessons learnt were that we all need each other to succeed, also that God gives us strength no matter how much our hearts and minds want to give up. We recommend that other young people embark on these hiking trails not only to see God’sbeauty but also to move away from the noise and buzz and find a quiet place to pray whilesurrounded by creation.
