Plant Kindness and Gather Love

On Saturday 23rd July 2022 the Green Teens from Holy Cross Anglican Church in Nyanga East , Cape Town. Organised a clean-up  and planting session with the help of young from our parish. The planting took place in the church premises. During the planting session, the Green activists took an opportunity to educate those attending  on the importance of planting and maintaining a healthy and green environment. We did all of this because without plants, essentially all life would starve to death. Strategically planting trees can have tremendous benefits on the environment. Not only will you help restore life quality in your community, but it positively contributes to the  environment and help fight the crisis of climate change and also set an example. Therefore, planting a tree is always a good idea. The whole experience made us feel better about the environment, and taught us to be able to take care of what takes care of us. It was also a way of us helping the wildlife flourish which wasalso vital for the planet’s survival. By: Khalipa girlsPhoto Credit: John-Paul Roberts

Mandela Day – Caring for our Precious Planet

On Saturday 16th of July 2022 members of Green Anglicans Teens from St Columba Gugulethu in Cape Town organised a Mandela Day clean-up in collaboration with the members of the local community and the City of Cape Town Municipality. The clean-up took place near the church premises where an illegal dump site has immerged near the lake and recreation park in the area. During the day members took the opportunity to educate community members on the impact illegal dumping has on the environment and the people who live close by these sites, part of the awareness was to empower people on what they can do when they witness someone illegally dumping as the dump does not just end in the Lake but flows down to our rivers and ends up in our oceans.  We did all of this to contribute towards the fight against climate change and show that we care for our precious planet Earth. Ash Wednesday 2022

Ash Wednesday gives us a chance to reflect on ways in which we have hurt God’s people and damaged God’s world – both in the things we have done and in the things we have failed to do. It is a time to confess our part in contributing to environmental degradation through our behaviours and lifestyle. And as we ‘repent and believe the good news’ it is a chance to commit ourselves anew to take action, to commit ourselves to 40 ‘little acts of good’. Creator God, we marvel that we are made from the dust of the earth, intimately connected and uniquely purposed within your creation. Yet we confess that we have polluted this planet with sin and soot, dirtying the world with unclean fuels and burning forests to ash. We have disconnected ourselves from our relationship to this planet; our actions and lifestyle choices have caused hurt to our neighbours near and far.  Lord have mercy. (Adapted from Living Lent)

Taize Pilgramage at Volmoed

On Saturday 28 November young people from the Western Cape joined in a Taize Pilgrimage of Trust at Volmoed Retreat Centre. The day was full of refreshing and fulfilling activities such as a time of self-reflection, a Walk to the Waterfall and prayers. Due to the COVID pandemic numbers were limited at Volmoed, however more tuned into the Zoom feed as we did the prayer services. The day consisted of several group workshops, one of which was Care for Creation led by the Green Anglicans team. During this time the group looked at what “Shalom” under Creation looked like and what we as Christians are called to do as instruments of God’s peaceful tribe. We also had a time of soaking in the nature that surrounded us and finding God in nature. At the end Rev Wilma and Rev Edwin shared about a dream which they have had since the 1980’s of having young people on a Taize Pilgrimage to Volmoed. This year that dream has finally come true . The day ended off with evening prayer.

A prayer walk/hike amidst of covid-19

2020 has been a daunting year spiritually, physically, mentally and more especially financially. This year alone we have witnessed such a high rise in number of deaths, cases of gender based violence especially femicide, job loss, as if that was not enough we continue to witness the brutal killing of children and also adaption (which we believe to be associated with human trafficking). So as expected young people have been under a lot of strain, the hope of finishing school ‘indue course’, of finding a job or even keeping one has been wearing down on them a lot. It is out of these reasons that youth of St Raphael’s (Sobantu, Pietermartizburg) decided to embark on a journey of seeking God’s intervention while experiencing nature. Joined in the hike were young people from Prince of Peace parish (Inanda), St Mary’s (Hammersdale), St Paul’s (Durban), St Faith’s (Durban), St Andrew’s (Clermont) and St Saviour’s (Ntuzuma) The hike took place at Giba gorge (Pine town) on the prayer items,; depression was the top of the list, self-worth and employment followed. Each obstacle conquered a prayer was said. Lessons learnt were that we all need each other to succeed, also that God gives us strength no matter how much our hearts and minds want to give up. We recommend that other young people embark on these hiking trails not only to see God’sbeauty but also to move away from the noise and buzz and find a quiet place to pray whilesurrounded by creation.
