Unplug and Play

“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it” – Proverbs 22:6

he Importance of Family Game Time: Strengthening Bonds & Reducing Screen Time

As Christian parents, we are called to nurture and guide our children in ways that honor God (Proverbs 22:6). One of the best ways to do this is by spending quality time together as a family. In today’s digital age, screens often dominate our lives, pulling us away from meaningful interactions. While technology has its benefits, too much screen time can harm our children’s health, relationships, and spiritual well-being.

The Dangers of Too Much Screen Time
Excessive screen time can lead to several negative effects, including:

  • Weakened Family Bonds – When everyone is glued to their devices, real conversations and connections suffer.
  • Physical Health Issues – Prolonged screen use can contribute to poor posture, eye strain, sleep disturbances, and a lack of physical activity.
  • Emotional and Mental Impact – Studies show excessive screen time can lead to anxiety, depression, and difficulty concentrating.
  • Spiritual Disconnection – Too much screen time can distract from prayer, Bible study, and living out faith-centered values in daily life.
  •

The Solution: Playing Games as a Family

One of the best ways to limit screen time is by engaging in fun, interactive family activities. Playing games together strengthens bonds, creates joyful memories, and teaches valuable life lessons. Consider these ideas:

  1. Board Games & Card Games – These encourage teamwork, strategy, and communication while keeping entertainment screen-free.
  2. Outdoor Games & Sports – Playing tag, soccer, or backyard challenges promotes physical activity and laughter.
  3. Bible Trivia & Faith-Based Games – Strengthen your family’s knowledge of Scripture in a fun and engaging way.
  4. Storytelling & Role-Playing Games – Encouraging creativity and imagination helps develop problem-solving skills and emotional intelligence.
  5. Cooking or Puzzle Challenges – Working together to complete a fun task fosters teamwork and patience.

Setting Healthy Boundaries

  • Create “Screen-Free” Family Nights – Dedicate one or more nights each week to unplugged family time.
  • Lead by Example – Show children that meaningful relationships are built through presence, not just technology.
  • Encourage Outdoor & Social Activities – Support hobbies, sports, and church events that promote real-world interaction.

By prioritizing family game time, we build stronger relationships, teach godly values, and create lasting memories. Let’s invest in what truly matters—our faith, family, and the love we share. 🎲🙏🏡
