On Sunday 6th of September , representatives from the South African Council of Churches, the Department of Environment (DFFE), City of Cape Town, and the NPOs working in the area of Environment gathered to launch the “Separation at Source” campaign
The Event was held at the United Congregational Church in Kraaifontein under Rev Don Sauls.
A vibrant service took place with the participation of award winning choir – Harry Gwala High from Khayelitsha. Each of the participating PROS (NGOS working in recycling shared how to deal with e-waste, plastic, paper, metal etc. We heard from Fiber Circle, Petco, Metpac and Urban Ore (E-waste). These organisations helped to train the church volunteers and provided bins and equipment
Mr Mathebula Chief directorate: Integrated Waste Management represented DFFE and Mr Makhuvela from the City of Cape Town.
Rev Rachel Mash, representing the South African Council of Churches and Green Anglicans, was the preacher for the day – linking to the theme of Season of Creation “Living Waters”. We heard how plastic and microplastic can be eaten by fish (and then us!) birds who feed their babies thinking it is food, and even entering the living waters in a mother’s womb. There is an urgent need to reduce the amount of plastic we produce and to up our efforts on recycling – this is God’s work and mission.
A pledge was signed that all parties would work together going forward.
A lovely programme was planned for the Sunday school -they were visited by Fibre Circle Mascot adn given goodie bags of stationary
The Church is already doing a great job in recycling – they have gathered 800 kg this year alone ! And the collaboration will enable them to expand their work which goes to support the soup kitchen for the community.
